Following technical assessment and a review of the site's fall protection arrangements, a multinational construction contractor placed an initial order for 30 smart safety harnesses for a project in the Middle East. The units are in use on live work at height, with wider rollout across the contractor's global projects under evaluation.
The pilot configuration uses the array smart safety harness, which detects harness state including non-use and low anchorage, and alarms both at the wearer and remotely. The contractor's interest centred on the configuration that is hardest to supervise by observation: a lanyard attached to an anchor point at or below the feet, which is invisible from ground level and which converts a short arrest into a long fall.
Two requirements shaped the specification. First, detection had to continue without mobile network coverage, which is common on construction sites and is where network-dependent safety devices quietly stop working. Second, the units had to retrofit to the harnesses the contractor already issued, so that rollout followed the existing equipment rather than replacing it.
“The decision was not about the alarm,” the project's safety lead commented. “It was about whether we could show, after the fact, what actually happened on a work front — for the client, and for our own review.”
The pilot is being monitored through the outage-style reporting the platform provides, with violation and usage records reviewed per work front. Subject to the outcome, the contractor is evaluating rollout across further projects.
